"Heart Attack vs. Cardiac Arrest: Know the Difference"

When it comes to heart-related emergencies, the terms heart attack and cardiac arrest are often used interchangeably — but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference between these two conditions could help save a life.

What is a Heart Attack?

A heart attack (also known as a myocardial infarction) occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked, usually due to a blood clot. This prevents oxygen from reaching the heart muscle, causing it to become damaged or die if not treated quickly.
Common symptoms include:

  • Chest pain or discomfort

  • Shortness of breath

  • Nausea or lightheadedness

  • Pain in the jaw, neck, back, or arms

Heart attacks are a circulation problem, and the heart usually continues to beat during the event.

What is Cardiac Arrest?

Cardiac arrest is a much more sudden and severe condition. It happens when the heart unexpectedly stops beating due to an electrical malfunction. As a result, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs.
Signs of cardiac arrest include:

  • Sudden collapse

  • No pulse

  • No breathing

  • Loss of consciousness

Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem — and it’s a medical emergency. Without immediate CPR and defibrillation, it can lead to death within minutes.

Can One Lead to the Other?

Yes, a heart attack can trigger cardiac arrest, especially if it causes a serious arrhythmia like ventricular fibrillation.

Why Knowing the Difference Matters

Quick recognition and response are vital. Call emergency services immediately in both cases, but understand that cardiac arrest requires CPR and defibrillation immediately — every second counts.
